A few writers over the centuries have produced a rich treasury of spiritual insight which has enabled people to deepen their faith while maturing in spiritual understanding and action. The sketches on the cover introduce some of the contemporary women and men whose lives and writings have been grounded in this precious tradition. The selections from their writings and others in this book have given inspiration and understanding to many who are seeking growth in the life of the Spirit.
This book has been developed by Ronald V. Wells, minister, professor and President of Crozer Theological Seminary and Sioux Falls College. From a modest beginning some 30 years ago, Dr. Wells continued to draw from these devotional classics, selections relating to eight of the spiritual disciplines necessary for personal spiritual formation. He enlarged and revised the material in the light of the response from 200 persons in 20 seminars conducted with church groups and four graduate theological seminaries and some individuals who used the book for their own personal reflection and devotion.
