MADISON, Ind. – In 2014, a year before Madison Presbyterian Church’s 200th anniversary, Jill Wiest and I volunteered to see what information we could find to enhance the celebration. After looking through many old files we wondered if we had found everything—after all, there are many nooks and crannies in our 1846 church building.

What about that old safe in the small room off the kitchen that had been the pastor’s study in the 1800s? It took a while to find the right key, but eventually we did and opened it. To our satisfaction, it held a treasure trove of documents, letters, and ledgers that told of some of the highs and lows of Madison Presbyterian Church through the years.

Salt & Light Choir to Visit Hanover

Press release from Hanover Presbyterian Church:

Salt & Light High School Choir from First Presbyterian Church, Boulder, Colorado has been in existence for about 35 years under the direction of a handful of leaders. Currently under the direction of Jim Keller, it has about 35 members ranging from 9-12 grade and from a total of 6 different high schools. Many of these students are highly talented in the performing arts and participate in their high school choirs. They come together each week to rehearse and eat together and they sing during the contemporary worship two times per month. Every year the choir takes a Tour over spring break and the destinations have ranged from Washington, D.C. to Seattle, WA to Scotland! It is the highlight of the year! In order to make this trip happen the group sets up various fundraising and this year is no exception. In the fall, they chose to set up a Pumpkin Patch in the Courtyard with fall snacks and pumpkin sales. In February they put on a Talent Show called Don’t Stop Believing where various students and friends put together acts to showcase their talents. The audience delighted in the extraordinary and diverse abilities of the Salt & Light High School Choir kids, their friends and family.

This year 20 students will be going on Tour and they will be visiting Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Dayton, Hanover, IN and Louisville. The stop in Dayton will include a visit to Devon Howard (and his wife Kimberly), former First Pres organist and accompanist to Salt & Light, supporters and chaperones. One of the benefits of going on Tour is the relationship building that takes place. The students come back with many stories of how they bonded with one another, developed a closer walk with Jesus, and shared their love of Jesus with others. This trip is truly an epic experience for many and the fact that they give up Spring Break vacation with their families is a testimony to that and their commitment to loving and serving others in the name of Jesus Christ!

Hanover College Social Justice Speaker: Living in the Age of Mass Incarceration

Land of the Free INCARCERATED

Living in the Age of Mass Incarceration: How it Affects Us and What to Do About It

The U.S.A. hosts 4.4 % of the world’s population, but 22% of its prisoners.

This event occurs on Tuesday, March 29th at 7:30 p.m. in the Ogle Center at Hanover College.

Dr. Angela Cowser, Professor of the Sociology of Religion and Director of the Center for Church and the Black Experience at Garrett Evangelical-Theological Seminary (UMC) in Evanston, IL is presenting the discussion. Dr. Cowser will challenge us to think about how the grave injustice of mass incarceration affects us in our own context, and how best we can respond. Admission is free, as the event is graciously sponsored by the Bill and June Rogers Speaker Series, as well as various student clubs and organizations at Hanover College.

Excerpt from the Courier-Journal, published 2/14/2016, written by Jenna Esarey:

St. John United Presbyterian Church in New Albany celebrated its 200th anniversary on Sunday with a worship service attended by a half-dozen or so of the church’s early leaders.

Members of the Friends of Fairview Reenactors represented significant figures in the history of the church. The group stages the annual “Stories Behind the Stones” event at New Albany’s historic Fairview Cemetery.
